“Full fibre broadband will revolutionise our lives”
From climbing poles to digging holes - Shadow Secretary of State for Wales, Jo Stevens sees for herself what it takes to be an Openreach engineer. (Gweler fersiwn Cymraeg isod / Welsh language version below)
Shadow Secretary of State for Wales, Jo Stevens and Shadow Wales Minister Gerald Jones MP recently visited Openreach’s National Learning Centre for Wales to learn more about the strides being made to bring ultrafast full fibre broadband to Wales.
Based in Newport, the multi-million pound learning centre gives trainee Openreach engineers the opportunity to learn the ropes and test their skills in a replica street, built from scratch to recreate the real network in the outside world.
Opened by Welsh Government First Minister, Mark Drakeford, in 2021 the centre enables engineers to experience a typical working day - from laying cables to building joints and making repairs, working underground or climbing telephone poles and installing new services inside customers’ homes and businesses.
During their visit both politicians were able to witness some of the training that Openreach engineers go through – such as climbing telegraph poles – before trying their hand at splicing fibre (where two ends of fibre optic glass cable are fused together).
Jo Stevens MP for Cardiff Central, said: “Good connectivity is fundamental to our communities and it’s been great to see the pride and passion Openreach and their engineers have in building their ultrafast network across the country.
“Full fibre broadband will revolutionise our lives. Openreach are investing heavily in their ultrafast infrastructure and I look forward to working with them to ensure that Wales and the rest of the UK is on the front foot, ready to take advantage of all the economic and social benefits it will bring”
Gerald Jones MP for Merthyr Tydfil and Rhymney added: “I’ve seen the positive impact full fibre broadband is already having on my constituents so it was good to see the investment being made by Openreach in the learning and development of their people.
“It’s been great to see all the training that Openreach engineers go through at their learning centre in Newport which we as a country will benefit from as the full fibre network is built and maintained across the country.
Hosting the visit was Kim Mears, Openreach Wales Board Chair, said: “Our National Learning Centre for Wales in Newport is key to our full fibre build across Wales.
“This is where we provide our trainees and more experienced engineers with their continued learning and development.
“We’re very proud to be building full fibre broadband faster, further and at a higher quality than any company in Wales and we’re reaching more communities than ever with our team of highly-skilled locally employed engineers.”

Openreach is on track to reach 25 million UK homes and businesses with access to Full Fibre ultrafast broadband and has already reached more than 700,000 properties across Wales.
With a workforce of around 2,300 in Wales, Openreach already employs the nation’s largest team of telecoms engineers and professionals.
Recent research by the Centre for Economics and Business Research (Cebr) highlighted the clear economic benefits of connecting everyone in Wales to full fibre. It estimated this would create a £2 billion boost to the Welsh economy.

“Bydd band eang ffeibr cyflawn yn chwyldroi ein bywydau"
Yn ddiweddar ymwelodd Ysgrifennydd Gwladol Cymru yr wrthblaid, Jo Stevens a Gweinidog Cymru yr wrthlaid, Gerald Jones AS â Chanolfan Dysgu Cenedlaethol Cymru Openreach i weld sut mae prif adeiladwr rhwydwaith y Deyrnas Unedig yn hyfforddi perianwyr er mwyn lledu band eang ffeibr tra-chyflym ar draws y wlad.
Mae’r ganolfan gwerth sawl £miliwn yng Nghasnewydd yn rhoi cyfle i beirianwyr Openreach ddysgu sgiliau newydd mewn stryd a adeiladwyd yn bwrpasol i adlewyrchu rhwydwaith cenedlaethol y cwmni.
Agorwyd y Ganolfan gan brif weinidog Llywodraeth Cymru, Mark Drakeford yn 2021 er mwyn galluogi peirianwyr i brofi diwrnod gwaith yn y byd go iawn - wrth osod ceblau a gwneud gwaith trwsio, gweithio o dan y ddaear neu ddringo polion ffôn a gosod gwasanaethau newydd o fewn cartrefi a busnesau cwsmeriaid.
Yn ystod eu hymweliad, cafodd y ddau ymwelydd y cyfle i weld y math o hyfforddiant bydd peirianwyr Openreach yn derbyn - o ddringo polion ffôn i sbleisio ffeibr (wrth ffiwsio dau gebl ffeibr optig â’i gilydd).
Dywedodd Jo Stevens AS Canol Caerdydd: "Mae cysylltedd da yn hanfodol i'n cymunedau ac mae wedi bod yn wych gweld y balchder a'r angerdd sydd gan Openreach a'u peirianwyr wrth adeiladu eu rhwydwaith tra-chyflym ledled y wlad.
“Bydd band eang ffeibr cyflawn yn chwyldroi ein bywydau. Mae Openreach yn buddsoddi'n helaeth yn eu seilwaith tra-chyflym ac edrychaf ymlaen at weithio gyda nhw i sicrhau bod Cymru a gweddill y DU ar y droed flaen, yn barod i fanteisio ar yr holl fanteision economaidd a chymdeithasol a ddaw yn ei sgil.”
Ychwanegodd Gerald Jones AS Merthyr Tudful a Rhymni: "Rwyf wedi gweld yr effaith gadarnhaol y mae band eang ffeibr llawn eisoes yn ei chael ar fy etholwyr, felly roedd yn dda gweld sut mae Openreach buddsoddu yn sgiliau a phrofiad ei peririanwyr.
"Mae wedi bod yn wych gweld yr holl hyfforddiant y mae peirianwyr Openreach yn mynd drwyddo yn eu canolfan ddysgu yng Nghasnewydd a sut byddwn ni fel gwlad yn elwa ohono wrth i'r rhwydwaith ffeibr cyflawn gael ei adeiladu a'i gynnal ledled y wlad.
Yno i groesawu’r Aelodau Seneddol oedd Kim Mears, Cadeirydd Bwrdd Openreach Cymru: "Mae ein Canolfan Dysgu Genedlaethol yng Nghasnewydd yn allweddol i'n rhwydwaith ffibr cyflawn ledled Cymru.
"Dyma lle rydyn ni'n hyfforddi ein peirianwyr – boed yn newydd neu’n mwy mwy profiadol –iI ddysgu sgiliau newydd sy’n angenrheidiol i’r swydd.
"Rydym yn falch iawn o’r ffaith ein bod’ ni’n adeiladu band eang ffeibr cyflawn yn gyflymach, ymhellach ac o ansawdd uwch nag unrhyw gwmni yng Nghymru ac rydym yn cyrraedd mwy o gymunedau nag erioed gyda'n tîm o beirianwyr lleol sydd â sgiliau uchel."
Am Openreach yng Nghymru
Mae Openreach yn dilyn ei raglen i gyrraedd 25 miliwn cartref a busnes yn y Deyrnas Unedig gyda band eang ffeibr cyflawn erbyn diwedd 2026 ac eisoes wedi cyrraedd dros 700,000 yng Nghymru.
Gyda gweithlu o oddeutu 2,300 yng Nghymru, mae Openreach eisoes yn cyflogi tîm peirianwyr a gweithwyr cysylltiedig mwyaf y genedl.
