Being a trainee engineer
As a trainee engineer, you’ll spend your days building the connections that people rely on. You’ll solve problems, get to know the community you serve, and experience new challenges every day.
The type of people we're looking for
Before you take the plunge and apply to join us as a trainee engineer, let’s take a look at the kind of person who’ll thrive in this role.
We’re looking for people who love a bit of adventure in their work – who enjoy working outside and don’t mind getting their hands dirty. People who love knowing how things work and how to fix them if they’re broken. People who are fascinated by learning how to use new systems and tools, and, most importantly, people who work best as part of a team.
A day in the life
As a trainee engineer your days will be varied. You might spend your morning in someone’s home, reconnecting them to the world and making their day, before heading off to a local small business and fixing a network problem. While no two days will be the same, you’ll really get to know your patch and the community you serve. As you solve different problems for different customers, you’ll be making connections everywhere you go.
Skills you need
You don’t need any previous engineering experience or qualifications to join our trainee engineer programme. We’ll provide you with world-class training and you’ll always be supported by your manager and your team.
There’s no barrier to becoming a trainee engineer other than your enthusiasm for the job and we welcome applications from people of all backgrounds. If you think it sounds up your street, get in touch – we’d love to tell you more about it.
Salary, hours and benefits
The starting salary for our trainee engineers is £23,345, with extra allowances for working in London and the Scottish Islands. Once you’ve been with us for a year, your salary can reach £30,003 including a bonus for reaching your targets. We’ll also work with you to develop your career, leading to the chance to earn even higher salaries in the future.
Your standard hours will 37.5 hours a week, which usually means 4-5 days between Monday and Saturday. Once you’ve clocked up some experience, there’ll also be regular opportunities for overtime.
We offer loads of great benefits too, like generous pension contributions and 22 days paid holiday a year, as well as dozens of discounted products and services, including broadband and BT TV.
