Llangoed residents join the ultrafast highway

Rhun ap Iorwerth MS and Llinos Medi MP recently joined Openreach engineers at Llangoed Community Hall to see for themselves how residents of the rural Ynys Môn village are now enjoying some of the fastest and most reliable broadband speeds available in the UK.
Both politicians were able to see up close the art of fibre splicing – where two ends of fibre optic glass cable no wider than a human hair are fused together. This delicate piece of engineering plays a vital role in Openreach’s Full Fibre network that’s already connected more than 16m properties across the UK.
Llangoed residents can now stay connected, benefit from faster speeds and greater reliability, and use multiple devices all at once without any slowdowns or buffering thanks to Openreach’s Full Fibre network.
This was made possible as a result of the community coming together to pledge their free UK Government Gigabit Vouchers as part of Openreach’s Fibre Community Partnership (FCP).
The new technology is up to 16[1] times faster than the average UK broadband connection and around five times more reliable than the old copper-based network it’s replacing.
Rhun ap Iorwerth MS said: “It’s been good to come to Llangoed to see the work being done by Openreach to connect this community to the latest broadband speeds.”
“It allows people to work from home, use broadband for leisure purposes and to use public services like banking.
“What’s particularly interesting about this scheme is that it’s been driven by the community – working together with Openreach to make sure that this connection happens.
“I look forward to seeing all our communities having this kind of connection as we absolutely need to unlock our potential.”
Llinos Medi MP said: “It’s been great to learn more from Openreach about the Full Fibre that’s coming to Llangoed and also the future options available to Ynys Môn and the rest of Wales.”
“Bringing modern technology to rural communities ensures equal opportunities for everyone on Ynys Môn.”
By applying for and pooling together free UK Government Gigabit Vouchers to help fund the build Llangoed has joined the 970,000 homes and businesses across Wales who already have access to Full Fibre broadband.
Martin Williams, Openreach’s Partnership Director for Wales, said: “Research shows that this new network will give businesses an edge and provide families and home-workers with future-proof connectivity.
“Our investment across Ynys Môn and the rest of Wales continues at pace, and we’re determined to deliver a great service which helps this community thrive and supports people to work from home easily, keep in touch with their loved ones and build connections and opportunities.
“Ultrafast broadband can have a huge impact on people’s lives and it’s great for the economy but upgrades aren’t automatic. People need to place an order with their chosen provider to get connected and we’ll do the rest.”
Residents can check if they qualify and pledge their voucher on the Connect My Community website. Using the vouchers – which don’t cost residents anything , enables Openreach to work with a local community to build a customised, co-funded network. The vouchers can be combined to extend the ultrafast, ultra-reliable network to premises in outlying rural areas which won’t be covered by private investment.
Full Fibre technology provides more reliable, resilient and future-proof connectivity; meaning fewer faults; more predictable, consistent speeds and enough capacity to easily meet growing data demands. It's also future-proof, which means it will serve generations to come and won’t need to be upgraded for decades.
Fibre optics - strands of glass around one-tenth the thickness of a human hair - transmit data using light signals. Fibre is smaller, lighter and more durable than copper cabling and less vulnerable to damage.

Yn ddiweddar, ymunodd Rhun ap Iorwerth AS a Llinos Medi (Aelod Seneddol) â pheirianwyr Openreach yn neuadd gymuned Llangoed i weld sut mae trigolion y pentref ar Ynys Môn yn mwynhau band eang ar gyflymder yn cymharu â’r cyflymaf yn y Deyrnas Unedig.
Roedd y ddau wedi profi’r grefft o sbleisio ffeibr - wrth ffiwsio dau gebl ffeibr optig tenau â’i gilydd. Mae’r gwaith peirianneg yma’n elfen hanfodol o rwydwaith ffeibr cyflawn Openreach sydd eisoes wedi cysylltu dros 16m cartref a busnes ar draws y DU.
Erbyn hyn mae trigolion Llangoed yn elwa o wasanaeth mwy cyflym a dibynadwy, heb wynebu byffro neu oedi, diolch i rwydwaith ffeibr cyflawn Openreach.
Llwyddwyd i wneud hynny ar ôl i’r gymuned ddod ynghyd i addo talebau gigabeit Llywodraeth y DU fel rhan o bartneriaeth ffeibr cymunedol Openreach.
Mae’r dechnoleg newydd hyd at 16[1] gwaith yn gyflymach na chysylltiad band eang cyfartalog y DU ac oddeutu 5 gwaith yn fwy dibynadwy na’r hen rwydwaith copr.
Dywedodd Rhun ap Iorwerth AS: “Roedd yn bleser dod yma i bentref Llangoed i weld ffrwyth gwaith Openreach wrth gysylltu’r gymuned â’r gwasanaeth band eang diweddaraf.”
“Mae’n galluogi pobl i weithio gartref, defnyddio band eang yn eu bywyd hamdden ac elwa o wasanaethau cyhoeddus fel bancio arlein.
“Beth sydd mor ddiddorol am y cynllun hwn yw bod y gymuned wedi gyrru’r broses - wrth gydweithio ag Openreach er mwyn sicrhau’r cysylltiad.
“Rwy’n edrych ymlaen at weld pob cymuned yn cael cysylltiad tebyg er mwyn datgloi eu potensial.”
Dywedodd Llinos Medi (Aelod Seneddol): “Roedd yn wych dysgu mwy gan Openreach am y gwasanaeth ffeibr cyflawn sy’n dŵad i ardal Llangoed a’r opsiynau eraill sy’n agored i Ynys Môn a gweddill y wlad.”

Wrth hawlio a chronni talebau gigabeit Llywodraeth y DU er mwyn helpu i ariannu’r gwaith, mae Llangoed wedi ymuno â dros 970,000 cartref a busnes ar draws y wlad sydd eisoes yn gallu cael band eang ffeibr cyflawn.
Dywedodd Martin Williams, cyfarwyddwr partneriaethau Openreach yng Nghymru: “Dengys ymchwil bydd y rhwydwaith newydd hwn yn rhoi mantais i fusnesau ac yn diogelu cysylltiadau teuluoedd a gweithwyr cartref dros yr hir dymor.
“Bydd ein buddsoddiad ar draws Ynys Môn a gweddill y wlad yn parhau, gyda’r cwmni yn benderfynol o ddarparu gwasanaeth fydd yn helpu’r gymuned i ffynnu a hwyluso gweithio gartref, cadw mewn cysylltiad â’r teulu a chynnal cysylltiadau a chyfleoedd.
“Mae band eang tra-chyflym yn gallu cael effaith enfawr ar fywydau pobl ac yn hwb i’r economi, ond ni fydd pobl yn derbyn uwchraddiad yn otomatig. Rhaid i bobl osod archeb gyda chwmni o’u dewis er mwyn cael cysylltiad, ac wedyn byddwn ni’n gwneud y gweddill.”
Mae trigolion yn gallu gwirio os ydynt yn gymwys i ymuno â’r cynllun ac addo eu taleb ar wefan Connect My Community. Bydd defnyddio’r talebau - na fydd yn costio ceiniog - yn galluogi Openreach i gydweithio â chymuned leol i adeiladu rhwydwaith ar y cyd â’r cymdogion. Gellir cyfuno’r talebau i ymestyn y rhwydwaith tra-chyflym i gartrefi mewn ardaloedd gwledig cyfagos na fydd yn destun buddsoddiad preifat.
Bydd y rhwydwaith newydd yn defnyddio technoleg ffeibr cyflawn er mwyn darparu cysylltedd mwy dibynadwy ar gyfer yr hir dymor; fydd yn golygu llai o namau; cyflymder mwy cyson a chynhwysedd digonol er diwallu cynnydd yn y galw yn y dyfodol. Bydd hefyd yn gwasanaethu anghenion cymunedau am ddegawdau i ddod.
Ffeibr optig - edafedd gwydr llai na gwallt pobl - yn trosglwyddo data drwy signalau golau. Mae ffeibr yn llai ac yn fwy ysgafn a gwydn na cheblau copr, ac yn llai tebygol o’i ddifrodi.
