Upgrading your home phone line to digital

On 31 January 2027, all traditional phone lines will need to move to a digital service. Instead of plugging your phone into a wall socket, your service will usually connect through your broadband router.

For most people, the change is likely to be straightforward - but it’s important to speak to your service provider as soon as possible so they can help you start the process. They’ll explain what needs to happen, help you choose the right digital option and support you through the switch.

Who will be affected by this switch off?

You’ll be affected if your home phone service still uses the traditional landline network. This includes:

  • homes with a phone-only landline service
  • homes with a landline and broadband package that still uses the traditional phone network

Why this change is happening

The traditional phone line network is ageing, making it harder to maintain, more vulnerable to faults and no longer meets modern needs. More services now rely on digital connections, so the UK needs a phone system that can support modern homes. Moving to digital phone lines will help provide you with a more reliable service, better-quality calls and smarter call blocking unwanted calls.

A more reliable phone service

Digital phone lines are designed to provide a more reliable service and better-quality calls.

More time to get ready

Acting early gives you more time to get everything up and running and avoid last-minute issues.

Support from your provider

Your service provider will explain your options and help you find the right digital service for your needs.

What you need to do

Your service provider will guide you through the move to a digital phone line. Here are the main things to do now:

1. Check any devices connected to your phone line

If you use telecare, a health alarm, health monitoring equipment or other devices connected to your phone line, tell your service provider before switching so they can help you check everything continues to work safely.

2. Contact your service provider

Speak to your current service provider about moving to a digital phone line. They’ll explain your options, what support is available and what needs to happen next.

Or find a new provider - This is also a good opportunity to shop around. Other providers may offer services at your address. Check what's available and compare deals.

3. Place your order to move to a digital phone line

Once you’ve chosen your provider and package, they’ll arrange the switch and guide you through the process. Act now to get everything set up before the deadline.

If you only have a phone line (no broadband)

If you have a phone line but don’t have broadband, your service provider will help you find the most suitable digital option for your needs.

What happens if you don’t make the switch?

The Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) switch off is happening on 31 January 2027. If you’re still using a traditional phone line, now is the time to speak to your service provider about moving to a digital service.

After the deadline, services that have not moved may be placed onto a limited emergency voice-only service (EVAc). This is designed to keep calls working temporarily but will only offer very limited and basic call features.

Switching now helps you stay connected and avoid last-minute issues. Talk to your service provider today to find the option that’s right for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Will I lose my phone number?

No, you can keep your existing phone number when you switch to a digital phone line.

  • How much will it cost?

Costs vary by provider and the package you choose. Contact your provider or shop around to compare prices.

  • Do I need to do anything to my phone handset?

In most cases, your existing handset will work with your new digital phone line - your provider will advise you during the switch.

  • What happens if I don’t switch to digital by 31 January 2027?

The PSTN will be switched off on 31 January 2027. Any customers that are still using services connected over this network after 31 January 2027 may be moved onto an emergency voice-only access service (EVAc), or you may lose your service altogether, so act now to avoid any unnecessary service disruption.

  • What is emergency voice-only service (EVAc)?

EVAc is a temporary emergency voice-only service for some customers who have not moved to digital before the PSTN switch off. It is designed to keep phone calls working for a limited time, but it may not support many calling features such as caller display, call forwarding or voicemail. To avoid being moved to EVAc, speak to your service provider as soon as possible.

  • What if I live in a block of flats and can't get access to full fibre?

Your provider can offer alternative broadband services that support digital phone lines. Contact them to discuss the options available at your address. Other network providers may also serve your building.
