6th Jan 2025

17 million premises now connected to Full Fibre

Openreach has confirmed it now provides Full Fibre broadband to 17 million homes and businesses – covering half of the UK. That’s thanks to a record year of network build and rising demand.

In 2024 alone, engineers connected an additional 4.2 million premises – equivalent to one every eight seconds.

Openreach build plans 2025 and beyond

  • Target: 25 million premises by end of 2026
  • Ambition: 30 million by 2030
  • Current pace: 78,000 new premises every week

From Shetland’s Isle of Unst to the Isles of Scilly, Openreach is connecting both cities and remote rural communities.

Over 4.3 million rural premises now have access to Full Fibre, helping close the digital divide.

Surge in broadband usage and orders

UK broadband usage increased by 10.8% in 2024, reaching a record 103,590 Petabytes. Openreach’s network powered peak periods like:

  • Streaming live football
  • Black Friday online shopping
  • Gaming console and content downloads

Meanwhile, Full Fibre orders rose by 26% year-on-year, with over 68,000 new orders every week via 300+ broadband providers, including BT, Sky, TalkTalk, Vodafone, and Zen.

CEO comment on progress and future

Clive Selley, CEO of Openreach, said:

“We’re building and connecting people faster than ever before. I’m proud of the progress we’ve made – and with sights now set on 30 million premises by 2030, we’re not slowing down.

“There’s still time for millions more homes and businesses to benefit, and many could get faster – and even cheaper – broadband today.”
