Openreach looks after the fibres, wires and cables that connect the country. So when you make calls, browse the web, download music, stream movies, catch up with TV on demand, indulge in a bit of online retail therapy or video call the in-laws – it’s most likely on our network.
We don’t sell phone, broadband or TV services. Instead, we work on behalf of over 500 service providers (such as Sky, TalkTalk, BT and Daisy) to maintain the local access network that connects 18 million homes and businesses to 5,500 local telephone exchanges using 120 million kilometres of cables. Our team of over 25,000 engineers complete about 170,000 jobs each week, providing new services and keeping the network running.
Of course, it’s not just about maintaining the current network; we’re also investing £3 billion to upgrade it – and we’ve rolled out superfast fibre broadband to more than 22 million homes and businesses in the UK already.
We’re also working with Broadband Development UK (BDUK) to support the government’s ambition to have 95% of UK addresses in a superfast area by 2017. We’re currently extending fibre’s reach more than 50,000 homes a week. For more information visit our superfast fibre website.
