Hannah and Mark discuss being Openreach trainee engineers

04 Mar 2019

Both Hannah and Mark Hargreaves work as Openreach traineer engineers in Accrington, Lancashire.  Hannah has been working as a trainee enginer for nine months and, after seeing how much she was enjoying her role, her husband Mark decided to apply for a role as an engineer too.

Why did you choose a career in engineering and why Openreach?

After the birth of my daughter, Meredith, I felt like I needed to make a change, but I wanted to stay within the telecommunications industry.  I saw that Openreach were recruiting in my area and thought I'd give it a go. Openreach has always been somewhere I'd wanted to work and the trainee engineering role seemed like it offered me this great opportunity.

What do you do?

I'm a trainee service delivery engineer.  Most of my day is spent installing and repairing phone and broadband lines to residential and small business customers.

What do you like most about the job?

I love being out and about and I really do think the fresh air does you good.  I also think the hours are great as I get to spend evenings with family which I wasn't able to do before.

You're become a bit of a celeb on LinedIn.  What does that involve and how did it come about?

A LOT of clicking!

It all started with a post about becoming an apprentice at the age of 30 and after just becoming a mum.

I then decided to promote women in engineering  because it's a job I never thought I could do and I think a lot of women will feel the same.  I'm basically trying to give more women the confidence to do things way out of their comfort zone.

Future plans?

I'd love to be a project manager or to work in business improvement.

"After hearing every evening how Hannah's day had gone, I was hooked. I've never known anyone with that sort of job satisfaction before and thought I'd apply."

Why did you choose a career in engineering and why Openreach?

I was looking for a career change and saw how much my wife Hannah, who'd recently joined Openreach, was enjoying her job.

I never thought I could ever be an engineer.  I didn't think I had the right mind-set to do it.  But I'm always up for a challenge and I've surprised myself at how well I'm doing.

What do you do?

I'm a fibre and network delivery engineer.  I'm basically helping to build and connect the fibre network to new building sites.  Unlike Hannah, my role doesn't involve going into homes and businesses.  You'll mainly find me working in the pavement, at the side of the road or sometimes inside the telephone exchanges.

What do you like most about the job?

I like the different variety of the jobs I do each day, from installing the fibre, to connecting it.  I love working outdoors in the fresh air no matter what the weather.

Future plans?

I want to manage my own team of engineers and help them, like others have helped me.  Who knows where this journey will take me.
