Optical Spectrum Services

Optical Spectrum Services provide high bandwidth connectivity for customers who need to move very large volumes of data between sites.

The Optical Spectrum Services portfolio is comprised of two products called Optical Spectrum Access (OSA) and Optical Spectrum Extended Access (OSEA).

Introduction

OSA and OSEA will be ideal for customers who, typically, need to move very large volumes of data between sites for Wide Area Network (WAN) and Storage Area Network (SAN) applications.

Communications Providers may, for example, use OSA and OSEA to offer complete end-to-end solutions such as bundling with Local Area Networks, routers, outsourcing, management, and maintenance or tele-housing and content hosting services.

OSA and OSEA will offer secure, permanently connected, point-to-point high speed data circuits using Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) technology. This technology allows each OSA or OSEA system to be split into a number of high bandwidth wavelengths.

Customers will be able to specify the number of wavelengths required per OSA or OSEA system and then choose the service interfaces that they need to connect their own equipment. Service interfaces can be a mix of Ethernet, Fibre Channel, traditional SDH (synchronous digital hierarchy), and other data interfaces.

Depending on the type of service interface fitted, each wavelength can be configured to support different protocols and carry separate data traffic. This enables a combination of protocols to operate simultaneously over an OSA or OSEA system.

Information about these products is available to download below.

Forecasts

Regular volume forecasts are important for OSA and OSEA as they will enable Openreach to adequately resource forthcoming order volumes and provide Openreach's suppliers with advance notification of orders.
